The Oxford Singers
The Oxford Singers are Oxford's largest vocal group for popular music of all sorts! The group takes on Motown, funk, rock anthems, jazz, musical theatre, film music and so much more. The group is established to perform whatever takes its fancy, and is very open to performing new works — get in touch!
Welcome to the new term!!
To all new students at the two universities in Oxford, welcome to the autumn term! For those students who were here last year, welcome back! All the best to all of you for the coming year! Whether new or old, if you're Oxford-based and want to have fun singing, do come along to an Oxford Singers rehearsal. We rehearse every Wednesday, at 6pm, at Pembroke College Chapel. We will be putting together a concert for the end of this term (watch this space), all of our Singers are welcome to take part should the wish to do so. No audition required, no questions asked!
Anyone can come along and join in the fun: you don’t need to audition, have previous choral experience or even necessarily read music. We usually meet on Wednesday evenings from 6-8pm in Pembroke College Chapel (just off St. Aldate's). Our first rehearsal this term is Wednesday of 1st week, the 21st of January. We welcome Oxford Uni students, Oxford Brookes students, ex-students and non-students. We also have an auditioned Small Ensemble, who meet on Monday evenings.
In Michaelmas (Autumn) and Hilary (Winter) terms, we stage big concerts at the end of term, with work from the choir as a whole, soloists, and smaller groups of our members. Photos and videos from some of these can be found in our gallery and our YouTube channel. In Trinity (Summer), we have a more informal schedule, with outings for busking, recording, or trying out whatever our members want to sing.
If you would like to get in touch about joining, or with any other queries, please contact Lizzie on firstname.lastname@example.org.
This is our YouTube trailer for the academic year 2012-2013. Please note that the contact details are no longer current! The fact that we love singing and having fun together is still entirely relevant :-)
The group was formed as With a Twist in Michaelmas 2009 by Jack Haynes, and met throughout Michaelmas and Hilary, performing a wide range of music from jazz, pop and traditional Christmas carols to spoken music, some of which was given its UK debut by the group. In Michaelmas 2010, the group returned as the Oxford Singers, and gave a stunning debut concert to a packed-out Corpus Christi Auditorium in 8th week.
Oxford Singers has since gone from strength to strength, with large concerts each Michaelmas and Hilary term, often to sell-out audiences. The Oxford Singers are also proud of their enjoyable and successful tradition of busking for charity during Trinity term, fundraising in the past for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research and Mencap. In 2014, we raised £340 for the Against Malaria Foundation.
The group is happy to be engaged in smaller recitals, and subsets of the choir have performed at a range of events from the A Cappella stage at the 2012 Oxford Rag Ball to Oxford gathering for International Women's Day 2011, as well as various College events around Oxford.
