We are The Oxford Singers, a choir for popular and contemporary music. The group takes on pop, funk, rock anthems, jazz, musical theatre, film music and so much more. In the decade since its formation, The Oxford Singers has brought together hundreds of singers of a variety of experience levels. With friendly and light weekly rehearsals, we aim to make music together, build confidence, and above all have fun!
Open to All
The Oxford Singers is, and always will be, open to anyone who likes to sing. We do not hold auditions or require any former choral experience. Our members all have different levels of ability and experience, and we are accessible and fun for singers at any level. Members don’t need to be able to read music as we learn all of our songs by ear, although sheet music is always provided. We welcome Oxford University students, Oxford Brookes students, ex-students and non-students.
Choir rehearsals are usually on a Wednesday from 6pm to 8pm, in Pembroke College Chapel. This can sometimes be subject to change, and our mailing list and Facebook page should have the details of any changes. All rehearsals are open to potential new members, so feel free to come and join the fun at any time!
The Oxford Singers only rehearse during Oxford University term times, preparing for concerts at the ends of Michaelmas (winter) and Hilary (spring) terms. In Trinity (summer) term we have more relaxed rehearsals and no concert, to allow for the added stress of exams for our student members.
The Oxford Singers perform a wide variety of popular music, and we are always open to new song suggestions. We sing a mixture of piano accompanied and a Capella songs. For members who are interested in arranging music, we can provide feedback and even sing your arrangements in choir! A large portion of our repertoire was arranged by current and former members.
The Oxford Singers hold large concerts each Michaelmas and Hilary term, showcasing a variety of performances from choir members, including the Small Ensemble and solo performances.
We are also proud of our enjoyable and successful tradition of busking for charity during Trinity term. During the summer, we take to the streets of Central Oxford to raise money for our nominated charity. Each year The Oxford Singers fundraise several hundred pounds for charities including Cancer Research UK, the Against Malaria Foundation, and Oxfordshire Mind.
For those who are looking to sing more challenging songs, we have a Small Ensemble which is auditioned and has an extra rehearsal each week. On top of The Oxford Singers main choir rehearsal, our Small Ensemble meets on Mondays from 6:30pm to 8:30pm in Lincoln College Chapel. Auditions for the Small Ensemble are very relaxed, and generally happen at the beginning of term. To join Small Ensemble please contact us online, or speak to the Musical Director in person at a Wednesday rehearsal.
The Oxford Signers committee are involved with organising and running the choir behind the scenes. New committee members are always welcome - even if all official roles are filled, there is always a way for members to help out. Our current Committee members are:
- President: Cas Burton
- Treasurer: Cas Burton
- Musical Director: Kelly van Eerde
- Pianist: Cleo Kwan
- Manager: Barnie Matthews
- Publicity Officer: Kelly van Eerde
- Tech Support: Christopher Hughes
- Webmaster: Cas Burton
